While the Agora wasn't packed last night for the Dark Matter tour that featured metalcore acts the Word Alive, Fit For A King, Out Came The Wolves, Along Came A Spider and It Lies Within, the high-energy show still had plenty going for it.

Headliners the Word Alive came out to a roar from the half-filled Agora Ballroom. The band opened with “Dreamer” and followed it with “Sellout,” a song off its upcoming album Dark Matter. One of the highlights came when singer Tyler “Telle” Smith unleashed an incredibly long, powerful, high scream in the middle of the song that seemingly went on forever. It was a testament to his screaming ability and really showed off his endurance. His high screams sounded sharp and out classed any of his other screams. He possesses a remarkable ability to hit the notes, and he showed that skill off last night.

That's not to take away from his singing ability however, which was showcased in songs like “Lighthouse” and, to a lesser extent, “Hounds of Anubis.” All around, Smith did an amazing job on the mic. His screams were spot on and his singing vocals were crisp and clean. Speaking of “Hounds of Anubis,” this might have been the one song that entirely showcased the band's overall musicianship the best. It featured high screams on top of singing and a dueling guitar solo that saw both guitarists Zack Hansen and Tony Pizzuti shredding next to one another. Even the drums in the song got pretty technical. The band features talented musicians that have no problem showing just how well versed and skilled they are.

Since most of the new songs they played haven't been released yet, a few fans grew frustrated with the choice to play so much new material and started yelling, “play old music,” to which Smith had a few choice words. He said, “We've been playing so much new music because it makes us happy and you won't get the show you pay for unless we're up here enjoying ourselves.”

Openers Fit For A King really woke the place up with their set. Harder songs like “Bitter End” and “Slave to Nothing” showcased Ryan Kirby's intense vocals. It really must be said that Kirby has some of the rawest and just downright brutal sounding screams in the genre right now. Fit For A King is a band that truly deserves more credit than it gets. They sound phenomenal live every single time they play. While the band hasn't blown up and isn't a poster child for the scene, the fans that follow them are loyal as hell. At the end of their set, after Kirby hit an elongated and brutal scream in “Warpath,” he mentioned the band will have a new album coming out later this year. Hopefully, this album gets them the credit they deserve.
