Report: LeBron to Star in "Space Jam 2"

Update: Hold your horses on the Hollywood Reporter scoop from earlier this afternoon that set the collective internet ablaze.

The script is officially in the works for Space Jam 2, and it's slated to star LeBron James. Justin Lin is in talks to direct, and screenwriter Andrew Dodge will work on the words. It's no sure bet that it'll actually land in a movie theater near you, but if the director and screenwriter are onboard, chances are better than they were before.

The news comes 20 years after the first live-action Space Jam was released in 1996 starring basketball great Michael Jordan. The movie was rumored to be in the works after LeBron James' production company, SpringHill Entertainment, signed on with Warners Bros. That was last summer around the same time LeBron first showed off his acting in the movie Trainwreck. LeBron commented on the rumors last summer, saying, "We hope [there's a sequel]. We’re definitely missing Bugs and Daffy and [the] Tasmanian Devil and every last one of them, so hopefully we can do some great things.”

In the first Space Jam, Michael Jordan teams up with Looney Tunes to battle alien basketball players.

Along with LeBron's scene-stealing turn in Trainwreck, James is also producing a reality show with CNBC to bring four new businesses to the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, and SpringHill Entertainment recently acquired the rights for a comedy feature based on a short, viral, fake draft video.

The original Space Jam netted $230.4 million at the box office.
