Indians to Honor Dick Jacobs in Heritage Park

There's been some bloggy chatter recently about what possible plans the Indians might have in permanently honoring cherished former owner Dick Jacobs. Rick from WFNY, as well as I, wondered if there might be a uniform patch in the works, since that's a common way for an organization to remember influential members of the team, whether they be players or owners. Turns out that a uniform patch is not in the works, but the Tribe will be honoring Jacobs another way.

According to Bob DiBiasio, Indians VP of Public Relations, the team will celebrate the influential reign of Jacobs in Heritage Park. "We plan on honoring Mr. Jacobs in Heritage Park as an inaugural inductee into the Indians Distinguished Hall of Fame, established to honor those non-uniformed personnel who contributed significantly to the fortunes of the franchise," DiBiasio said in an e-mail. "Induction ceremonies will be August 1. Mr. Jacobs was aware of this honor."

That is certainly a nice gesture, as it will stand in perpetuity, or at least until the park is torn down. But even in that case, I'm sure Heritage Park will move on to wherever the new home may be.

A modest proposal (as suggested by a friend): Rename Progressive Field back to Jacobs Field for one day. In fact, if the ceremonies are on August 1, that would be the perfect date. No need to change the signs or anything. Just make it known to the announcers that the one-day name change is in effect to honor Jacobs. Also, the grounds crew could mow the old Jacobs Field logo into the outfield grass. How nice would that be?
