Vintage Cleveland Sports Newspaper Ads

Posted By on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 11:16 AM

I swear, there's some honest-go-god blog material coming this week and next, but while I'm working on that enjoy a trip in the Way Back Machine and check out some stunning old ads for Clevo sporting events. The one to the right is for the Cleveland Rosenblums, and honestly, how could you pass up a chance to see them play after checking out the form they're displaying here.

Below and after the jump there's plenty more, including Marion Motley's bar, Browns all stars playing basketball against Alabama State, and a nifty tip on how you would know when the Indians were playing back in the day just by looking at the Terminal Tower.

(All images come from this absolutely fantastic Flickr photostream.)

New Homage Swag: 10-Cent Beer, Columbus Horizon

Posted By on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 3:40 PM

We're not going to see any commemorative gear remembering 10-Cent Beer Night from the Indians or anything that could be remotely considered official MLB gear. Thankfully, Homage Clothing knows people want this shit.

They've also got a great Columbus Horizon shirt. What are the Horizon?

The Columbus Horizon is a defunct basketball team from Columbus, Ohio that played for five seasons in the Continental Basketball Association in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In 1989, the CBA league championship trophy was named the Jay Ramsdell Trophy to honor the memory of an extraordinary young man who, prior to his tragic death in a plane crash, had become the youngest commissioner in the history of professional sports. In addition to this incredible milestone, Ramsdell was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a CBA franchise for Columbus.

Defunct basketball teams and infamous cheap bear debauchery. Can't get better than that. Well, actually it can. Portions of every t-shirt sale from Homage are going to relief efforts in Haiti. Look good, be good.

Another Tremendous Delonte West Video

Posted By on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 1:19 PM

So, this video is from last year, but a) I'd never seen it before today, and b) It's a rule: Any time you find a dynamite video of Delonte West doing something awesome you must post it. (Yes, it's not KFC freestyle, but really, what is?)

Background: Video comes from a Cavs practice when the guys are playing the "Rain Man" game. Basically, you hoist the ball up to some absurd height and hope to make the shot. That's really not the great thing here, though.

Check out Delonte from about the 20-second mark on. Have you seen anything as magical as that fro that he's rocking? How great is it when he notices the camera and starts flexing, primping his fro, and dancing? Hell. Yes. Bring back the fro, Delonte.

Browns Owner Randy Lerner Close to a Championship

Posted By on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 12:16 PM

Well, in the Carling Cup, anyway. Aston Villa advanced over Blackburn on 7-4 aggregate for their first trip to Wembley for a Cup final since 1996. They'll find out their opponent this Wednesday after Manchester United and Manchester City finish up the final leg of their semifinal. The final is set for February 28.

Manager Martin O'Neill thinks that this is going to be especially sweet for Randy Lerner:

The American entrepreneur was at Villa Park last Wednesday night to witness the remarkable semi-final second-leg victory over Blackburn.

The 47-year-old Cleveland Browns owner is now tantalisingly close to securing his first piece of major silverware since buying the club off Doug Ellis almost three-and-a-half years ago.

And O’Neill admits that not many football club owners will experience the day out that Lerner and the rest of the claret and blue army will make on February 28.

“He (Lerner) is bound to be happy really,” said O’Neill.

“I think when you become the owner of a football club, deep down you want to improve the status of it and the position of it, but eventually trips to Wembley are things you would dream of but not necessarily achieve during your time of ownership.

“So to happen now for him is pretty pleasing.”

And, as we've read a million times since Lerner purchased the team just over 3 years ago, he's still regarded as one of the best owners across the pond, and absolutely heads and tails above his fellow Yankees who also own teams.

Unlike some of his compatriots, Lerner actually has an interest in football, fostered during a year spent at Clare College, Cambridge, as a student.

But there is more that separates him from the likes of Hicks and Gillett. As one club employee pointed out, unlike any of the other major Premier League players, his wealth is inherited from his father, and his nature is to build something rather than see it as a vehicle for making a buck.

It is an approach that has been embraced by supporters. When Tom Hicks Jnr made his ill-advised stop-off at a Sandon pub, the son of the Liverpool co-owner got covered in lager.

When Lerner goes to the Holte after matches, as he often does, he is welcomed. In January 2008. Dave Woodhall, of fanzine Heroes and Villains, described the mood of supporters as thus: "The fans worship the ground Randy walks on. He can't do anything wrong. He's got the common touch, and it seems like he genuinely cares."
