Not quite 40, guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel’s innovations can be traced to many of today’s developments in jazz guitar. Up-and-comers like Adam Rogers and Lage Lund owe much to Rosenwinkel, who first hit the New York scene in 1990. Consolidating the folk-like muse of Bill Frisell with a linear sense of melody and a taste for pop-music trends, Rosenwinkel’s sound is rich and singularly organic. He’ll often sing in unison with his guitar lines to add another layer of complexity to the mix. Coming to the attention of legendary vibes player Gary Burton while attending the Berklee College of Music, Rosenwinkel found work as a session man, leading to gigs with Mark Turner and Brad Melhdau. He made his major-label debut in 2000 on The Enemies of Energy. Over the course of his next four albums, Rosenwinkel developed a new voice, with electronics helping to shape his signature guitar approach. Rosenwinkel’s latest album, The Remedy: Live at the Village Vanguard, was recorded at the storied Greenwich Village club. Now based in Berlin, Rosenwinkel stops at Nighttown (12387 Cedar Rd., Cleveland Hts., 216.795.0550) at 7 tonight. He leads a powerhouse trio that includes bassist Ben Street and drummer Rodney Green.
