When the North Mississippi Allstars’ Cody Dickinson formed Hill Country Revue, he claimed it wasn’t the end of the Allstars. Whether or not that’s the case, he’s treated Hill Country Revue as a serious side project ever since the band came together after a Bonnaroo jam session. Earlier this year, the group released its debut album, Make a Move, and has been on the road ever since. The Revue — which also features bassist Chris Chew, guitarist Kirk Smithheart, drummer Ed “Hot” Cleveland and harmonica player Daniel Coburn — boasts an authentic blues sound, in part because they recruited Garry Burnside (son of Mississippi blues icon R.L. Burnside) to write many of their lyrics. Songs like “You Can Make It” may sound far too cheery to pass as blues, but “Let Me Love You” and “Georgia Women” are real barnburners that find Smithheart delivering some explosive slide-guitar riffs.
