11/20: Negative Approach at Now That's Class

Back in the early ’80s, when hardcore punk was in its formative stage, bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains represented the East Coast, while Black Flag and the Germs ruled the West. What most people forget is that the Midwest had its own vibrant scene led by Detroit’s Negative Approach. Taking the scuzzy, blaring abandon of the Stooges and turning it into pure anger and aggression, Negative Approach planted the seeds of Midwestern hardcore over a short three-year span. In 2006, the group reunited for Touch and Go Records’ 25th Anniversary and went from being an influential band that old scenesters could brag about seeing to a piece of living hardcore history. You may have waited 20 years, but now you too can say you’ve seen these hardcore legends onstage.
