11/6: 17 Swedish Designers at CIA

IKEA has been synonymous as a source of Scandinavian home designs for decades. Clean lines and unpretentious functionality mark the store’s bookshelves, chairs and tables, typically available in white or other neutral colors that are devoid of affectation or nostalgia. The Cleveland Institute of Art gives a much more profound and nuanced look at design from that part of the world in 17 Swedish Designers. While it’s predominantly a male-dominated field, all the contributors in this show are contemporary women who shape products for the world as they see it. It opens with a reception from 6:30-8:30 tonight and continues through December 19 at CIA’s Reinberger Galleries (11141 East Blvd., 800.223.4700). Admission is free. — Gill
