12/3: Holly Golightly at the Beachland

This Holly Golightly is no Audrey Hepburn looking for breakfast at Tiffany’s with a Japanese Mickey Rooney at her side. This British singer-songwriter loves American roots music, and her sidekick is Texas expat multi-instrumentalist Lawyer Dave. Golightly broke into the music biz in the early ’90s as part of Thee Headcoatees, an all-female band created by English cult icon Billy Childish. But she became best known on these shores for her appearance on the White Stripes’ Elephant. Her own music is well worth discovering. Her recent records — the full-length Dirt Don’t Hurt and the Devil Do EP — come stocked with spooky but fun country-blues, highlighted by the playfully felonious “My 45” and the holy (rock and) roller “Getting’ High for Jesus.” Golightly and Lawyer Dave sound like Knitters-era John Doe and Exene or a hillbilly-noir collaboration between Neko Case and Tom Waits. Their backwoods style is more than just a musical choice; it’s also their way of life — they live in rural Georgia. Also recommended are openers the Pines, who craft quietly compelling Americana.
