It’s rare enough for a person to come from one culture and excel in the music of another. But to master the music to the point of becoming part of the tradition is something else. Clarinetist and Bang on a Can All-Star founder Evan Ziporyn has done just that with the jangly sound of the Balinese gamelan — a percussion set-up consisting of multiple brass bowls played by a group of musicians who overlap and interlock lines of rhythm. Played the traditional way, it’s music Paul Gauguin might have heard during his travels. But Ziporyn and the 30-member Gamelan Galak Tika mix the conventional sounds with rock ’n’ roll and modern minimalist influences. Ziporyn has collaborated with Brian Eno, Ornette Coleman, Philip Glass and Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore. Gamelan Galak Tika perform as part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Viva and Gala Around Town series at 7:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (1 Wade Oval Dr., 216.421.7350).
