3/21: Buzzard Sunday

Avid buzzard trackers, led by “Official Buzzard Spotter” Bob Hinkle of the Cleveland Metroparks, have been keeping watch for the annual return of the big scavenger birds — also known as turkey vultures — to Hinckley (they usually start arriving around March 15). Since the late ’50s, this has become a local milestone, capped by Buzzard Sunday, which takes place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. today at the Hinckley Metroparks Reservation Buzzard Roost (State Rd & West Dr., Hinckley, 440.526.1012). Visitors can view the buzzard scoreboard, play games like Buzzard Bingo, learn about the birds, take hikes, ride a bus tour of the reservation, and listen to some stories and music. Best of all, it’s free. The village of Hinckley gets in on the fun too, sponsoring a pancake breakfast and arts-and-crafts fair from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Hinckley Elementary School (Rt. 303, east of Rt. 94). Call the chamber of commerce at 330.278.2066 for more info. — Anastasia Pantsios
