3/5: Pere Ubu at the Beachland

Over the past several years, Pere Ubu singer David Thomas has gotten even more cantankerous. At a local concert a few years ago, he threw a tantrum when the sound wasn’t to his liking. Then again, we’re talking about a guy who adapted the alias Crocus Behemoth at one point. But Thomas’ high standards should be applauded. The latest incarnation of Ubu features a group of talented players who keep the level of musicianship high. For tonight’s show — which kicks off the Beachland Ballroom’s (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124) 10th anniversary celebration — the band will perform its seminal 1978 album The Modern Dance in its entirety. The group has gone through various permutations since then, but Thomas’ ability to command an audience has only grown, partly because his artistic sensibilities have evolved into performance art. Short Rabbits open at 9 p.m.; tickets are $20. Also tonight, the Tavern side of the club hosts local noisemakers This Moment in Black History and Sun God, who celebrate the release of a split 12-inch. That show starts at 9 p.m. and tickets are $5. — Jeff Niesel
