5-28: Cleveland Orchestra performs Staud

Austrian composer Johannes Maria Staud is in the international spotlight about as much as a young composer can be these days. Two major orchestras — the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and our very own Cleveland Orchestra — will premiere large orchestral works by the 34-year-old Staud this summer. This weekend, the Cleveland Orchestra wraps up its season with Staud’s On Comparative Mythology, which will be conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. The piece is inspired by Polish writer Bruno Schulz’s short stories and his descriptions of nature. Also on the program: Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, famous for its Adagietto, which is often described as a “song without words.” Performances are at 8 p.m. tonight, tomorrow and Saturday at Severance Hall (11001 Euclid Ave., 216.231.1111).
