5-29: Jessica Lea Mayfield at Musica

1c87/1242850695-jlmayfield.jpgAfter releasing an album as Chittlin’ and embarking on a national tour with up-and-coming bluegrass jam band the Avett Brothers, singer-songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield has finally gotten her break. Her latest album, last year’s With Blasphemy So Heartfelt (produced by Black Keys singer-guitarist Dan Auerbach), sounds like a cross between Cat Power and Neko Case. It features doe-eyed harmonies and somber songs about falling in love and getting dumped. The haunting vocals on tunes like “I Can’t Lie to You, Love” and “Is This Love?” reveal an artist who is wise beyond her years. There’s also a profound sadness that runs among all the rural, bluegrass-informed sounds that Mayfield first introduced as Chittlin’ a few years back. Among the Oak & Ash and Ashley Brooke Toussant open at 9 p.m. at Musica (51 E Market St., Akron, 330.374.1114). Tickets: $12. — Jeff Niesel
