After playing in John Phillip Sousa’s band, Meredith Willson wrote other musicals and plenty of songs, including the University of Iowa’s fight song. But he remains best known for his first musical, a story that tells of “Trouble in River City,” in which a con man comes to town selling musical instruments and band uniforms, planting visions of “Seventy-Six Trombones” leading a big parade. The Music Man won 5 Tonys in 1957, the original cast album won the first such Grammy, the Beatles has a hit in 1963 with one of its tunes, “’Til There Was You,” and it was made into a movie twice. Cassidy Theatre (6200 Pearl Road, Parma Heights, 440.842.4600) opens its Lester Currie-directed production at 8 p.m. with performances through July 26. Tickets: $15-$20. — Michael Gill
