7/5: Project/Object at the Beachland

Want to see how another Frank Zappa tribute group honors the legend? Here’s your chance, just two days after Zappa Plays Zappa — Dweezil Zappa’s exacting homage to his late father’s astonishing catalog — comes to town. The longstanding and much acclaimed (or greatly maligned, depending on fence position) Project/Object show began long before Ike Willis, Zappa’s guitarist for a decade and a half, was associated with it. It started in New Jersey in the early ’90s among friends who assembled in guitarist André Cholmendeley’s basement every year to jam on Zappa’s birthday. The band sent a tape to Willis, who was so impressed, he played on a couple of Project/Object tours, eventually joining the band on a semi-permanent basis. They’ve notched some impressive accomplishments since then, including playing the entire Joe’s Garage suite, something even Zappa never staged. Look for special guest Don Preston, keyboardist/resident maniac in the original Mothers of Invention, onstage with the band when they play the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124) at 8 p.m. Cuda, Renko & Cuda open. Tickets: $18 advance, $20 day of show. — Brian Baker
