8/7: Verb Ballets at Cain Park

Verb Ballets’ varied influences come out in full force tonight. The program reaches into Cleveland’s dance heritage with the company premiere of a work by former Cleveland San Jose Ballet dancer Ginger Thatcher: the classical ballet piece “Urban Study.” Also on the program is the revival of Ohio Ballet founder Heinz Poll’s 1968 dance, “Elegaic Song,” which is haunted by the choreographer’s memories of wartime Germany and set to music by Shostakovich. Things get quite a bit cheerier with the company premiere of the George Balanchine duet, “Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux,” and the world premiere of a ballroom-dance-inspired piece choreographed by ballroom champion Gary Pierce and set to music by George Gershwin. Showtime is at 8 p.m. at Cain Park’s Evans Amphitheater (14591 Superior Rd., Cleveland Hts., 216.371.3000). Tickets: $16-$23. — Michael Gill
