When Kings X roared into the public consciousness more than 20 years ago, they filled an unusual musical niche: a multiracial, spiritually based pop-metal power trio from Texas. Over the past two decades, the group has survived plenty of upheaval (record company changes, fighting the Christian-rock label, management drama) while generally maintaining their core sound: melodic hard rock with a touch of Beatles influence. Kings X continue to make engaging albums, including their latest, last year’s XV, and the members remain committed to the band even as they pursue solo projects (guitarist Ty Tabor alone has released five solo albums). After nearly three decades together, Kings X are still one of the most original rock bands out there.
