Also on Stage: Air Waves (Part 3 of the Elements Cycle)

There was once a time when the art of theater was as simple as sitting around a fire and listening to a story.

And stories, however fictional they may be, are often the true histories of mankind. They resonate with human yearning, and therefore ring truer than most facts.

With Air Waves, Cleveland Public Theatre's artistic director, Raymond Bobgan, and his creative, collaborative team of actors, writers and designers have reinvigorated the story. And in this case, it is a story of warning - a reminder of the preciousness of a clean breath.

We sit and have a glass of wine while a myth unfolds. It is the future. Air is suddenly a commodity. Three wishes are made, a contract signed – and off we go. From place to place in the elastic CPT space we are taken inside the minds of a heart attack victim on an airplane, a bargaining session with the last Queen Bee on earth, a game show where contestants compete for bags of air, and into the past of an attempted suicide victim.

Fantasy mingles with hard reality, lending Air Waves a wild and honest sense of creativity.

With song, creative movement, nightmarish poetry and imagery, we swirl around the theme in fascinating ways, bypassing language with experiences that drive straight into our dreams. This is Bobgan's baby and his genius. This is a must-see, not just for environmentalists, but for caring people anywhere.

Air Waves will run from Jan. 30 through Feb. 15 at Cleveland Public Theatre, 6415 Detroit Ave.,
