A couple of Cleveland orchestras recently announced international tours for November. Apollo's Fire will visit Europe for the first time. Using their airfare efficiently, they kick things off with a November 21 concert as part of New York City's Music Before 1800 series. After that, they have dates in Zaragoza and Bilbao, Spain; Tilburg and Heerlen, the Netherlands; and in London. Music director Jeannette Sorrell will lead the orchestra in Fire & Folly: Myths of Love and Betrayal, which includes music by Vivaldi, Tartini, Montéclair and Handel. While they're in London, they'll do a live interview and performance on BBC radio before their concert, which will also be broadcast.
International touring is old hat for the Cleveland Orchestra, which has announced plans for a tour of Japan and South Korea. It's the 10th time Franz Welser-Möst has been on international tour with the orchestra, but the first time they've been to Asia together. The orchestra's last performances in Japan were in 1998; they last played in South Korea in 1978. The tour's centerpiece is a four-concert series at Tokyo's Suntory Hall. Mitsuko Uchida will conduct an all-Mozart program from the keyboard for two of the Suntory Hall dates. She's also the soloist in an all-Beethoven program cnducted by Welser-Möst. The fourth program there features Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Takemitsu's Dream/Window and Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. The other dates are at Kitara Concert Hall in Sapporo, Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Nishinomiya, and South Korea's Goyang Arts Center and Seoul Arts Center.
Dana Depew has put out the call for submissions for two upcoming group shows at Asterisk Gallery (2393 Professor Ave.). He's looking for work for Labor & Industry 2010, which opens September 10, and for Objects to Be Destroyed, which will open later in the fall. Both show titles describe their content.
