Arts News: Cut to Pieces, Not Cut Yet

And more local arts news

Cleveland Public Theatre has extended Cut to Pieces, a one-woman show starring Chris Seibert and directed by Raymond Bobgan. Reviewing the production for Scene, Christine Howey wrote: "By taking the age-old trope of several people convened at a spooky mansion and twisting virtually everything thereafter, Bobgan and Seibert come up with a bounty of inspired moments. Cut to Pieces has an innocent arrogance and an energetic spirit of invention that makes it a thoroughly memorable experience." Initially scheduled to run through this weekend, the additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. June 4-6 at Cleveland Public Theatre (6415 Detroit, 216.631.2727, cptonline.org). Tickets are $10-$20.

Rachel Hunt's classmates are pursuing more career-oriented experiences for their senior projects. But the Strongsville High School senior chose to intern with Wunderkind Gallery (16006 Waterloo Rd., in North Collinwood), which is devoted to children's art. Gallery owner Jerry Schmidt encouraged her to create a show of kid art, which she's calling Not Your Mother's Refrigerator. "The idea is that art doesn't have to be a luxury," says Hunt. "It's something everyone can participate in." She's put out the call for artists ages 5-16 to submit work, which must be framed and offered for sale. The deadline is May 29. The show opens with a reception from 5 p.m.-1 a.m. June 5, and will hang until mid-July. For information, call 440.263.2254.

St. Clair Superior Development Corporation continues to honor the Chinese calendar with the installation of sculpted animals — 2009 is the Year of the Ox — customized by local artists. Participating artists include Martin Boyle, JoAnn DePolo, Willie Duck, Michael Greenwald, Beth Gregerson, Rick Heller, Ron and Margie Hill, Milan Kecman, Mitzi Lai, Krisztina Lazar, Kirk Mangus, Sylvia Masek, Billy Nainiger, Lisa Ruschman, Alane Sandoval and Scott Pickering, Terri Snider, Karen Wellman and Veronica Zak. The celebration begins with a free reception from noon-1:30 p.m. Monday at the outdoor courtyard of the Galleria at Erieview (1301 E. 9th St.). The herd will be unveiled to the public from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. June 4 at Wooltex Gallery in the Tower Press Building (1900 Superior). On June 5, they will be installed at various locations in the St. Clair-Superior area, downtown and University Circle. For details and installation locations, go to stclairsuperior.org.
