TUE 4/6

Tuesdays at the Pirate's Cove are more than just another night of synth-driven tunes from the '80s. They're also an opportunity for local bands to hang out -- some of them as guest bartenders.

The idea sprouted last year, when This Moment in Black History needed cash for a tour. Instead of making them sing for their supper, the Cove's captain, Joe Reid, placed the guys behind the bar -- that way, they could earn tips too. Patrons responded so enthusiastically that Reid began recruiting other local bands, including members of Roué and the Sign-Offs.

And since they've logged plenty of hours on the other side of the bar, they're quick studies when it comes to pouring proper drinks. "We train them for about an hour," Reid says. This Moment in Black History takes orders at the Cove (2083-1/2 East 21st Street) at 10 p.m. Admission is free; call 216-664-0867. -- Fred Wright
