It’s not that stand-up comic Alex Ortiz doesn’t enjoy playing universities. He just prefers comedy clubs. “You have to be 100 percent clean in colleges,” he says. “There can’t be any sex or drugs. That’s all I talk about!” The domestic jokes that make up a huge chunk of his routine also pose a problem. “I talk about being married and having kids,” he says. “Those kids can’t relate to that. I constantly have to tell myself, I can’t do this joke, I can’t do that joke.” Still, he always has the race card. “I’m half black, half Puerto Rican, which is really messed up,” he says. “That means I was born a suspect.”
