Competitive Chili News

Pat Roundtree of Cleveland walked off with $150 and the coveted "Golden Ladle" for winning the fifth annual Chili Cook-Off at the Closing Room (13813 Lorain Ave.; 216-688-1670) on Saturday. Top-ranked by a five-judge panel, Roundtree's chunky chili was loaded with a combo of smoked steak, bacon, sausage, and pork -- plus a can of that universal tenderizer, beer. Not bad for Roundtree's first competition, against 14 other contestants. His key to victory? "I entered because I'm a fat fucker," he says. "And I like to eat." Roundtree edged out Lynn Anderson for first place, even though many of the bar's regulars preferred her homemade chili. "It's tastes just like my mom's," one patron told us. It should; Lynn is the mother of Closing Room owner Scott Anderson. -- Cris Glaser
