In Olivier Smolders' spooky Belgian film, Black Night (Nuit Noire), an uptight bug-watcher named Oscar spends his days cataloging dead insects at the Natural Sciences Museum. But the days have turned to nights, with the sun making only a one-blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo shortly before noon each day. To make the 92-minute plot more bizarre, Oscar finds a naked African woman in his boudoir. Suffering from a mysterious and incurable disease, she has decided to die in his bed. Critics have applauded the flick as "a mix of dreams, nightmares, fears, and sexuality," all filtered through a sarcastic Belgian sense of humor. In other words, think David Lynch's weird Eraserhead and Ingmar Bergman's surreal Hour of the Wolf, with a hint of nightmarish Kafka fiction.
