Drumming Up Interest

Cleveland art
Drumming is good for you. And at today's third-annual Drum and Music Festival, area percussionists beat that message into folks' heads for more than 12 hours. "Drumming relieves stress," says organizer George Lawrence, who owns George's Drum Shop in Cuyahoga Falls and also plays skins in the country-rock band Poco. "It's therapy [that] stimulates healing and good health." Today's daylong drum fest features workshops, demonstrations, and performances by more than 50 percussion-heavy groups, including Carlos Jones and the Plus Band and the Panyard Steel Drum Orchestra. It all culminates in a drum-solo contest. "Everyone is a drummer at heart," says Lawrence. "It appeals not only to those who play drums, but also to those who play their steering wheels and desks."
