Singer-songwriter Brent Kirby blames the dissolution of Mavis, his Nashville-based rock band, and subsequent move to Cleveland in 2001 on the usual "artistic differences." "We broke up as soon as things were getting off the ground," he says. "That particular dream died, and I knew inside [that] to improve as a songwriter I needed new experiences, new names, and new faces." Kirby now teaches songwriting classes at the Fairmount School of Music in Cleveland Heights. He also fronts two bands, the Flashing 12s and the Jack Fords. But tonight, he'll play a solo acoustic set inspired by the "album that changed my life," says the Wisconsin native. "I heard Springsteen's Nebraska, and it was at that moment that I realized I was a songwriter."
