Summit Metro Parks naturalist Danusia Casteel leads a tour of seasonal foliage at today’s Wild Flowers in Winter Hike. The two-mile trek along the Chippewa Trail unveils colorful wildflowers<\!s>.<\!s>.<\!s>. despite the chill. “People might look at the field and think all the plants are dried and ugly,” says Casteel. “But if you look closely, these are the same flowers you see in dried arrangements in many homes.”

The wildflowers also attract wildlife. If you want your backyard to look like something out of a Disney cartoon, pick and plant some of the perennials, says Casteel. You’ll have butterflies and birds frolicking in your yard in no time. Plus, perennials are low-maintenance. Even people without green thumbs can maintain a wildflower garden.

Today’s hike uncovers such wildflowers as milkweed, goldenrod, and aster. But be sure to throw on a warm coat. “Dress for the climate,” Casteel says. “And strap on your boots.”
