Going Solo, Together

A pair of music vets team up, but don't call them a duo.

Freebo and Jim Photoglo don't want you to get the impression that they're a duo. "We're both singer-songwriters with our own style of music to share," says Freebo.

Over the past 30 years, both artists have carved out spots within their respective scenes — Freebo as a journeyman bassist and Photoglo as a country songwriter. Between them, they've gigged with Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills & Nash (Freebo), Faith Hill, and Kenny Rogers (Photoglo). Each has released solo albums over the years. Their pairing, they say, comes from a mutual admiration of 1970s singer-songwriters and the desire to play music without record-label suits breathing down their necks. "When you eliminate the middleman and just go for the human connection, it's magnificent," says Photoglo. "I think this life is about touching others," adds Freebo. "It all starts by singing a song."
