Green on Screen

Brent Green's animated short films, which wrestle with messages of mortality, are featured in tonight's opening reception of his debut exhibit, Animation in 4 Dimensions. "I wake up every morning and think, 'Damn, I'm going to die. I need to make something wonderful,'" says the 29-year-old Green. And he has. The Pennsylvania native assembles stop-motion flicks with images from his drawings and carvings. He then writes, scores, and narrates each of the stories, which are about ill-fated characters — like a bully who's hit by a bus after he shoots helpless animals. "I have to close my eyes and picture the film from end to end," he says. "It's what it looks like in my head."Green also admits he finds more macabre inspiration in music and literature than in paintings and sculptures. "The art world keeps crawling up its own asshole. It's stale and worthless," says Green. "The music world speaks to everybody." The exhibit's opening reception is from 5:30 to 8 tonight at the Sculpture Center, 1834 East 123rd Street.
