Harvest of Hate

In Protocols of Zion, documentary filmmaker Marc Levin sets out to uncover the origin of the new urban myth that no Jews were killed at the World Trade Center on September 11. Rumor had it that Jewish folks were tipped off about the imminent destruction by a conspiracy-minded book titled The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Turns out, the volume is a fake concocted in the late 1800s. But the hate, fear, and violence that Levin discovers are very real. The director uses Arab television programs, Holocaust deniers, and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ to explore a new wave of anti-Semitism taking place around the world and, particularly, in America. He also talks to his synagogue's cantor, whose day job is to piece together the remains of 9-11 victims, and he watches in shock and disgust the online video of journalist Daniel Pearl being beheaded. Best moment: Levin's chat with a white supremacist who, after Levin brings up the theory that Hitler devised the Holocaust to eradicate his own Jewishness, dismisses it by stating that Hitler wasn't the suicidal type. Levin quickly reminds the skinhead that Hitler killed himself.
