Like Apocalypse Now, the new movie Gabrielle is based on a story by Joseph Conrad. Unlike Francis Ford Coppola's reworked and relocated Vietnam flick, Gabrielle sticks close to its source material. At the turn of the 20th century, a bourgeois French couple seemingly has it all — loads of money, a mansion, good help, and well-to-do friends. Without warning, Gabrielle leaves a letter for her husband, saying that she's run off with another man. But before her departure even sinks in, she comes back (hence the title of Conrad's original story, The Return). The French film chronicles the next two days, as hsband and wife deal with infidelity, whispering staff, and a dinner party, which includes the man for whom Gabrielle intended to leave her husband. It's an absorbing look at a dissolving marriage.
