Stand-up comic Melanie Maloy is often mistaken for a stoner. She thinks it might have something to do with her dreadlocks. "But that's just a coincidence," she jokes.

Kidding aside, Maloy — a young vegetarian hippie — has a stage persona that drifts somewhere between a Ritalin-deprived kid and a pot-addled twentysomething. After graduating from college, the Pittsburgh native says, she had no clue what she wanted to do. "My mom, of all people, suggested stand-up comedy," she says. "Very, very bizarre advice from a parent. Usually they try to steer you away from jobs like that."
