Liar, Liar

Daniel Tosh builds comedy out of fiction, not fact.

Many stand-up comics draw on their lives for material. Not Daniel Tosh. In fact, the subversive Los Angeles funnyman likes lying so much, he titled his hit comedy CD True Stories I Made Up. And he doesn't shy away from controversy: He's all for steroids in sports — because bulked-up players look better on his new HD TV.

Tosh's popularity has soared, thanks to a growing college fan base, but that audience has some drawbacks. "I write a lot of material," he says. "But fans at almost every show will request certain bits. They want to acknowledge that they know some of my jokes." Tosh prefers to test new bits when he's onstage, even if "they lay flat," he says. "But I have enough jokes that even if no one gets them, I'll end with some bathroom reference to get a laugh."
