Just ask Kibibi and Zuri, who can throw more strikes and spares with their papier-mâché bowling balls than their keepers at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo can shake a pin at.Because of the creatures' athletic prowess, the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers is staging the 18th annual
Bowling for Rhinos to try and break last year's pot of $12,498 raised for rhino sanctuaries. It also throws a spotlight on the plight of the endangered beasts in Africa, where they're poached for their cherished horns. To show its appreciation, the chapter hands out prizes to bowlers, who can help bring in at least $100 each in pledges for the benefit. "People get really excited about the cause, because it's people who work at the zoo and support the zoo to help rhinos," says organizer Tom O'Konowitz. "I think a lot of people don't realize how endangered rhinos are right now." Bowling is from 6:30 to midnight tonight at Cloverleaf Lanes, 5610 Brecksville Road in Independence.
