Jeff Guise (pictured) can ace college-prep classes, attend student-leadership conferences, and still compete at cross-country meets for Westlake High School. So at last year's Sky Bank Cleveland Triathlon, it was nothing new for the 17-year-old senior to manage multiple events. "My main problem was that I didn't have as much time on the bike as I would have liked," says Guise, who placed 39th in the competition's 250-man field. "But since I was a runner, I was able to make up a huge amount of ground." Sandwiched between a one-and-a-half-mile swim in Lake Erie and a 10K footrace to the finish line at the Rock Hall, Sunday's event includes a 24-mile bike ride on Cleveland's West Side. "As long as you're proficient at two of the three legs, you can do really well," says Guise, who's competing again this year. For the sake of their 35 beehives, Walter and Linda Jorgensen pray for hot weather, little wind, and no rain at this weekend's What's the Buzz? Besides honey-tastings and beeswax-candle-making, the three-day bee festival gives brave volunteers a chance to try on one of the Jorgensens' three-pound "bee beards" ("We just suck them off with a vacuum," says Linda). But only if the weather cooperates. "Bees can tell if a storm is coming, and they're not too happy," says Jorgensen of the Lorain County Beekeeping Association. "We want them in a friendly mood [and not] stinging. We've had people miss a couple weeks of work [after] doing this." Cleveland's Frank Scalish defends his title in Sandusky this weekend, when the CITGO Bassmaster Northern Open tournament circuit comes to the area. Last summer, the 44-year-old angler bagged more than 55 pounds of fish off the Lake Erie shoreline in Buffalo and reeled in $50,000 in cash. After this year's Ohio stop, 150 competitors travel to New York's Lake Champlain and Oneida Lake to crown the overall series champ. They cast from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through July 16 at the Shelby Street Launch Ramp, at the corner of Shelby and Water streets in Sandusky.
