Gargoyles dancing in black tights to New Age music is not all that weird in the Lock-Coleman household. After all, the husband-and-wife team behind DanceWorks 2008's multimedia piece
Fear of Falling experiments with funky costumes, music, and video for the production. "Her work excites me," says Larry Coleman, the photog who shot and edited the films that screen behind choreographer Lisa Lock's expressive dance moves. "We didn't want to add the video haphazardly into the dance. We wanted to weave it into the piece and get people to think." In neutral black-and-gray costumes, Lock pretends she's a gargoyle, dancing with partners Troy McCarty and Artour Bajanov. Her unconventional moves have often been compared to an insect on a dance floor. "I guess it's the way I like to shorten my torso, because I'm into individuality in a big way," says Lock. "I like to layer my work. It's up to you to interpret it in the end."
