L.A. novelist Lisa See resurrects the true story of three women in 17th-century China in Peony in Love. Together, the gals wrote a scathing critique of one of the country's infamous operas. The catch is that women could only read its libretto, but weren't allowed to see it performed in public because many thought it caused lovesickness, even death.
