Women can tackle their time of the month at today’s Moon Cycle Yoga: Yoga, Menstruation, and Menopause workshop at River’s Edge. The course features yoga instructions, guided meditations, and storytelling. “We are surrounded by unhealthy messages that make menstruation and menopause a taboo,” says therapist Jackie Toth, who runs the program. “Both experiences are ‘medicalized,’ and many women feel alienated from their body cycles.”

The four-and-a-half-hour class covers many of the crimson wave’s different contours -- including menstruation, perimenopause, and menopause. It’s designed to help ladies relieve even the most unpleasant symptoms and encourage them to “look at these internal, cosmic rhythms with less negativity and more acceptance,” says Toth. The low-impact, holistic session is open to experts as well as to women who can barely touch their toes. “Practicing restorative yoga just before menstruation can decrease or eliminate cramping, bloating, headaches, and muscle tension,” claims Toth. This new-age approach to period management isn’t limited to merely reducing physical stress and hormonally induced anger, says Toth. It’s also about accepting change -- a difficult challenge for many who deal with everyday pressures. “Yoga has a way of encouraging us to regard ourselves as sacred and valuable,” she says. “It can help us reconnect to the sacredness of our cycles.”
