Miss Tess works the Beachland tonight.
Every Monday, Scene calendar editor Cris Glaser provides a random but reliable sampling of things to do in the week ahead. For more options, log onto entertainment.clevescene.com. And check back Friday for C-Notes' Picks of the Weekend. Monday: Boston songbird Miss Tess has opened for the likes of Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, and Shawn Colvin. But tonight, she and her Bon Ton Parade backup band command the stage all by themselves at the Beachland to promote their 12-track CD, Modern Vintage, with such cheery tunes as “I Bear the Child of the Devil” and “I Only Miss You When I’m Stoned.” Catch their show at 8 p.m. A $7 ticket gets you in the door. Call 216-383-1124 for more info. Tuesday: Life as a stand-up comedian is like oral sex in an airplane washroom, says Chicago comic Kenny Rogerson. It feels good, he admits, but you’re “scared shitless” that someone’s going to open the door and catch you in the act. Surprise him by catching his 8 p.m. show at Hilarities today through Thursday, 7:30 and 10:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Call 216-241-7425 for tickets ranging from $15 to $23. Wednesday: Darin Croft can bet that he has one of the loftiest jobs in Cleveland. At Case Western Reserve University, the mammalian paleontologist scours the mountains of South America in search of animal remains from hundreds, even thousands, of years ago. Then he mounts them on wooden stands for armchair archaeologists to check out. Learn about his work in his 7 p.m. lecture, Fossil Mammals from 14,000 Feet, at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Admission is $7 by calling 215-231-4600. Thursday: Yuppie theater geeks sharpen their networking skills for the Cleveland Play House’s Theatre Rocks blowout before tonight’s performance of All Hail Hurricane Gordo. The club’s mission is to attract 25- to 40-year-olds to live theater with pre-performance booze and apps. The best part is that a ticket costs just $25, when general admission to the show can set you back at least $39. The party runs from 6 p.m. until the 8 p.m. curtain time. Call 216-795-7000 for details.
