Frank Marino has been strangling strange noises out of his guitar for 35 years now. A disciple of Jimi Hendrix and a forefather of Eddie Van Halen, Marino — who has made most of his records with his longtime band, Mahogany Rush — combines rattling notes, howling cries, and something that sounds like a barge coming in to dock. Marino taps into Hendrix's sound collages and finds exciting new landscapes beneath all the noise. He even hauls out a killer cover of Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" on his most recent CD, Real Live. Marino is now on a 35th anniversary tour with Mahogany Rush, playing originals like "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" and covers by, of course, Hendrix.
