The Cleveland Art Theatre lends a feminine perspective to the life and death of Jesus at tonight's opening of the gospel drama O Mary, Don't You Weep. The all-female cast portrays the six Marys of the New Testament: Mary, mother of Jesus; Mary, mother of John Mark; Mary of Galilee; Mary of Bethany; Mary, wife of Cleophus; and Mary Magdalene, whose reputation gets a makeover. "She's always depicted as this prostitute, and I don't know where people got that from," says director Margaret Ford-Taylor. "In our production, she's a person who parties, but she's not all that."

While there's little interaction among the actresses onstage, each Mary recounts Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. "When you think about Jesus, you think about this man being crucified and a cross being drug up the aisle," says Ford-Taylor. "We didn't write the Bible. We just used creative license to hook it all together."
Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 4 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 4 p.m. Starts: March 31. Continues through April 16
