The five-year-old quintet has toured the Eastern U.S. and Canada extensively since the release of its 2004 self-titled debut. But it's the annual Halloween gig — complete with audience participation inspired by The Rocky Horror Picture Show — that is the must-see show of the year, with a set list that includes "Dammit Janet," "Sweet Transvestite," and, of course, "Time Warp."
"People freak out, and they start doing the dance," says Tabbara. "And we get to take our artistic liberties with that song."
But be warned, fans of "Hot Patootie": Because of the bar's space limitations, the Zou won't be playing that song tonight. "I know a lot of fans will get mad about that," says Tabbara. "If we did it, we'd want to be dramatic with it. I was going to come out on a motorcycle, but we thought it would be too hard to pull it off."
During the show's intermission, band members hand out awards to clubgoers dressed in the sexiest, scariest, and most original Halloween costumes. "It's funny that half of the audience is indie hipsters," says Tabbara. "You'll see drunken college girls having a good time, and you'll see guys in the front row with their Bud Lites yelling, 'Yeah, dude!'"
