Did you know that more than 75 percent of HIV patients diagnosed in December in Cuyahoga County were black? The news certainly stunned Michelle Jackson, the organizer of this weekend's Black HIV Awareness Expo. "I thought it was a gay-white-male, IV-drug-user thing," says Jackson. "For somebody who's well read and educated, I wasn't aware of the impact on the African American community." The expo includes a string of safe-sex workshops. It also features performances of Before It Hits Home — Cheryl L. West's play about an AIDS-infected jazz musician whose sexual activities put his partners at risk — at 8 tonight and 3 p.m. tomorrow. "It's not a story about a battle against the virus," says director Ray Allmond. "It's a story about a battle against ignorance."
