Welcome to the Dollhouse

New York Doll is one of the most poignant documentaries you'll see all year. It profiles New York Dolls bassist Arthur "Killer" Kane, a quiet, stoic man who used to dab on tons of mascara before showtime. The proto-punk band imploded in the mid-'70s — hard-drug use eventually led to three members' deaths — and Kane, suffering from depression and upset by singer David Johansen's post-breakup success, nearly killed himself and his wife. Eventually he converted to Mormonism and found peace. The film, a chronicle of his path to a 2004 show with the two surviving Dolls, is highlighted by the band's performance and Kane's touching reunion with Johansen. But you'll be most moved by the postscript: Kane died of leukemia three weeks after the concert.
