What's a Master Bartender? Let Rob Turek Show You

Bartender Rob Turek is the main attraction every Thursday, Friday, and Sunday night at Spy. The master-level "flairtender" juggles beer mugs, ignites drinks, and balances liquor bottles in the palms of his hands. Turek has competed at national tournaments in Las Vegas and gave demos at a mammoth Super Bowl blowout in Detroit last February. He's even started his own company to organize regional competitions and manage other daredevil bartenders. But Turek's biggest challenge comes Wednesday, November 8, when he performs at Spy in a benefit for his six-year-old son, Cody. In the next couple of weeks, the bubbly first-grader will undergo brain surgery at the Cleveland Clinic for a rare form of epilepsy called Landau Kleffner Syndrome, or LKS. The boy was diagnosed with the disease in June 2005, when he started to mispronounce words, break sentences midstream, and struggle through a series of seizures. Today, Cody has grown immune to most of his medication. His entire story is told here. It's now come down to surgery, for which Turek will need to pay $15,000 not covered by insurance. That's where you come in. For a $5 cover, Turek and his Startender cast will put on a flairtending show, complete with bottle-tossing and shotglass-juggling. You can also catch the crew on Thursday, November 9, at Major Woody's in Columbus. -- Cris Glaser
