Best Diner: Dottie's Diner

Bright, colorful, and decked out with enough 1950s paraphernalia to outfit the Cleavers' rec room, this cheerful restaurant, built from two silvery, vintage dining cars, is our favorite refuge on days when life in the 21st century seems too complicated. The encyclopedic menu of homey comfort food ranges from applewood-smoked bacon to zippy vegetarian chili, with plenty of pancakes, meatloaf, and roast turkey in between. And when we've had a really hard day, Dottie's thick chocolate shakes and malts turn frowns upside down every time.
