Best Bowling: Northgate Lanes

With its vintage neon sign, $7 pitchers of Samuel Adams, and smoke-friendly environment, Northgate Lanes is the kind of throwback that reminds Northeast Ohioans why bowling was once our favorite pastime. The entrance unfolds into a basement stocked with 20 polyurethaned lanes, pool tables, a wood-paneled bar, and a snack stand offering only the most synthetic munchies. Its unassuming location in an otherwise lifeless strip mall also keeps Northgate well hidden from the teenybopper crowd. Its regulars tend to be of the blue-collar, six-beer-minimum variety. Many remember the good ol' days when these lanes bred Akron's finest professional bowlers, including PBA Hall of Famer Fred Borden.
