Best Director: Scott Spence

As the artistic director of Beck Center for nearly three decades, Scott Spence has continually offered top quality theatrical work while balancing creative risk-taking with responsible stewardship of the programming. That's important, since we've seen several other theater companies go belly-up for economic reasons. But when Spence takes risks, as he did with his massive, rousing, deliriously deafening production of American Idiot last year, the dividends for our region are enormous. And he often schedules smaller, offbeat shows into the Beck Studio Theater, providing theater lovers a taste of stage fare that's different and intriguing.
