Five Warped Picks

Posted By on Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 12:17 PM

Now in its 15th year, the Vans Warped Tour has come a long way since its inception as a punk-rock showcase. With more bands and styles than ever, the traveling festival hits Cleveland’s Time-Warner Cable Amphitheater at Tower City on Thursday. This year, more than 69 groups are scheduled to perform, beginning at noon.

To help you wade through the crowd, C-Notes’ Andrea Sweazy has picked five standout acts, including some of the big, different departures that Warped has featured in recent years. Because we thought it would be refreshing for you to hear from someone who likes to dance.

Jeffree Star
Web: www.myspace.com/jeffreestar
What he's like: A glitterific, naughty dance party.
Why you need to see him: This self-made Internet sensation and "queen of the beautiful" really knows how to work the crowd. He makes girls want to be as beautiful as him and straight boys will definitely question their sexuality.

Big D and the Kids Table
Web: www.myspace.com/bigdandthekidstable
What they’re like: Dub / punk / ska music that will have you bouncing around to the beat.
Why you need to see them: This high energy group is sure to entertain long time fans while making new ones out of first time viewers. Bottom line: They are a good time for all.

Web: www.myspace.com/innerpartysystem
What they’re like: Synthesized dance beats reminiscent of the ’80s, without the Flock of Seagulls hair.
Why you need to see them: Their electric beats and on stage presence will infect even the the strictest non-dancers.

Westbound Train
Web: www.myspace.com/westboundtrain
What they sound like: If bob marley threw a ska party and supplied the "favors."
Why you need to see them: Ska lovers and hippie groovers alike can find a common ground in the music. you'll groove to the music and enjoy the stories told through the lyrics

Breathe Carolina
Web: www.myspace.com/breathecarolina
What they sound like: Poppy electronica with a dash of screamo
Why you need to see them: Girls will be dancing and swooning over the band's good looks. Boys will be watching the girls. For the older crowd, this band is good clean fun and will remind you of your teens. (Your parents didn't always understand your taste in music, did they?)
